In Norway, all universities and university colleges which receive government grants are associated with a "studentsamskipnad" - a student welfare organisation. The role of a student welfare organisation is to look after students' welfare needs at their places of learning. This non-profit organization is dedicated to student services, and subject to the Ministry of Education and Research and an own law to ensure students rights and welfare. About SiT – Studentsamskipnaden i Trondheim Studentsamskipnaden i Trondheim (SiT) has the main welfare responsibility for students at NTNU, HiST, DMMH and law students at Folkeuniversitetet. SiT was founded in 1948 and runs a range of services such as student housing, cafes, bookshops and kindergartens. As a student at one of the institutions mentioned above, you have access to these services. SiT is run by a group board with student majority (4 students), two principals, and two employee representatives from SiT. Students have the majority and also hold the Chairman’s position. The student representatives are elected for two years periods by the Velferdstinget i Trondheim (welfare organization for students) who also works on the political level national as well as local to improve students’ rights.
